Chinese New Year Makeup Tutorial

Kung Hei Fat Choi, everyone!   I only realized that it was almost Chinese New year when my parents asked me to cancel all my plans this weekend because we were going to celebrate it with our family friends. I got inspired to do a makeup tutorial for this special occasion because Chinese are always very meticulous about presentation/ appearance. You don't need to have colorful or crazy makeup to stand out at a Chinese gathering. In fact, most traditional or old school Chinese parents don't like that. So my advice for those who want to wow a crowd this Chinese New Year is to look fresh, clean and simple!
Here are some of my recent makeup finds that I used for this look:  1. FACE: Fairy Drops Candy Bar BB Cream & Nars Orgasm Blush 2. EYES: Lancome Petit Tresor Eyeshadow, Etude House Drawing Show Creamy Liner & Fairy Drops Volume Burst Mascara 3. LIPS: Chanel Rouge Coco #19
FAIRYDROPS CANDY BB CREAM is very convenient to use. You can apply it directly on your face using the built-in sponge or you can twist the cap and get the product from the tube if you're using a brush.
The shade I'm using is OCHRE; it's somewhat similar to MAC's NC35. Apply dots all over your face before spreading it with your stippling or foundation brush. I normally don't use BB cream whenever I know that I'm being photographed because it's leaves my skin too moisturized, therefore making my face too oily and the SPF causes white patches to appear when using flash photography. But FAIRY DROPS CANDY BAR BB CREAM has a semi-matte finish and doesn't contain SPF so this is what I use nowadays whenever I attend events.
See, my blemishes and dark spots disappeared after one sheer coat of Fairydrops BB Cream! You can seal it in with a little pressed powder if you have oily skin. (I look weird without any color on my face!)
For my eyes, I used LANCOME's Petit Tresor Sparkling Color eyeshadow in High Fidelity. I got this from their Holiday Collection. I chose this color because Chinese love anything and everything gold.
ETUDE HOUSE sent me their Drawing Show Creamy Liner last year but I was able to use it just now since I just ran out of my usual brand. I love this because it glides on really smooth and doesn't smudge after application. The product also comes with a retractable eyeliner brush.
For those who aren't or don't look Chinese, now is the perfect time to draw on those winged or cat eyes style eyeliner to create chinky-looking eyes.
But of course, you wouldn't want your eyes to look too small so you need to put a coat or two of FAIRY DROPS VOLUME BURST MASCARA. The brand is really popular for their patented 3 teardrop mascara wand.
It can really thicken and lengthen your lashes in just two coats. It's waterproof too! Fairydrops is somewhat new here in Manila but I've seen it in Hong Kong before and I've read that it's really famous in Tokyo.
For the cheeks, I used the most natural pink blush that I have, NARS Orgasm. My mom always tells me to rub off my makeup whenever I use bright blush shades so I'm sure she won't complain when I use this on Chinese New Year's Eve.
Aside from gold, Chinese LOVE red. It's their lucky color so we're required to wear red whenever we have birthdays, celebrations and special occasions like Chinese New Year. I want to attract lots of luck this year so I'll overdo it by having super red lips using CHANEL Rouge Coco #19
Red lips will make your teeth look whiter! Got this tip from my CLOSEUP WHITE NOW SOS Beauty Kit
Since you have reaaaally simple makeup on, you can put on a statement necklace like this gray H&M x Lanvin inspired necklace from FROU FROU FASHION.
I hope you enjoyed my simple makeup tutorial. Have a happy and blessed year of the Water Snake!! :) Written by Sample Room Partner Blogger Marj of The Travelling Heels. Read more of her musings about makeup, fashion, and life at her blog!
