Roommate of the Month for December 2017

Passion is the force that unleashes creativity. As Albert Einstein once claimed, “I have no special talents, I am only passionately curious” then he later proved himself to be one of the greatest physicist in the world and discovered the theory of relativity which completely changed how we now see the universe. But beside the point, there are goals that may not be as grand as Einstein’s, but no matter how big or small it is, finding the energy to pursue them can sometimes be tricky. That is why it is still amazing to find people who do their own thing and at the same time have enough passion to pursue them on their own terms, like our December #RoommateOfTheMonth, Helen Blas of luckycitrine.blogspot.com!

It’s inspiring how her drive to find the perfect beauty product and her good intention led her into the idea of pursuing a blog where she can openly share her opinions about beauty products and food to other women.

You can discover more details about her and her online journey as she answers a few our questions below.

1. Tell us about you and your blog.

“I’m Helen, an office girl by day and a blogger during my free time. I write about beauty, lifestyle, and food. My site was named after a citrine bracelet I got way back in 2009. It was said to give me luck so I wore it for years before I took it off in 2014. I no longer needed it when I proclaimed my faith in Christ. I retained my blog name, though! (You can learn more about it here: http://luckycitrine.blogspot.com/2014/10/farewell-lucky-citrine.html)”

2. When did you start your blog and what inspired you to create one?

“My love for all things beauty started during my teenage years where I’d buy Candy magazine and absorb all the beauty tips inside. It was during my college years that I first chanced upon beauty blogs and I’d read them every single day! Sometimes, I’d search for reviews of products I’m interested in but couldn’t find any, so I figured that if I did my own reviews, I could help other people. It took some time before I published my first post, which wasn’t even an introduction post but a restaurant review. I love makeup and eating out – that’s why!”

3. Who are the bloggers that you look up to?

“The first blogger that played a huge influence in my life is Nikki Tiu of Askmewhats.com. It was the first beauty blog I read and followed – as in I’d visit the site every day, and I still wasn’t blogging then. I also like Rowena Lei of animetric.net since her reviews are always honest, concise, and straight to the point. My current favorite read is Liz Lanuzo’s projectvanity.com. I love how she transformed her blog into an online beauty magazine and the articles are always well-written.”

4. Top 3 pieces of advice you can give to our roommates who are interested to start up a blog.

“First, just be yourself! Let your unique personality shine through your work. Second, be resourceful. When I first started my blog, I was so excited to write reviews on everything. First target was my kikay (beauty) kit – I took photos of everything I had even if they weren’t spanking new, and just started writing. Third and probably my favorite –it’s possible to create real friendships from the online world. You can leave comments on other blogs to connect with other bloggers. When given the chance to attend events, it’s always fun because you get to socialize with like-minded beauty lovers. My favorite is when my girls and I catch up for dinner and occasional sleepovers.”

1. Share with us your skincare routine!

“In the morning, I just wash my face and apply a day moisturizer with SPF before applying makeup. At night, I double cleanse via micellar water and foaming facial wash. I usually just use affordable Korean facial wash since they do the job well. I ALWAYS use toner to remove excess dirt, and I get less breakouts because of it. Then I apply serum, eye cream, moisturizer, and lip balm. Occasionally, I use tea tree oil for breakouts. Then body butter all over my body to seal the deal.”

2. How about your makeup routine?

“My work makeup routine is simple. My brows are tattooed so I don’t have to fill them in every day. (Thank you, Lord!) I just conceal my dark circles, apply face powder using my dense flat-top brush (not puff) for a more even application, curl my lashes, apply blush to make me look alive, and of course, lipstick. I can do this in less than 10 minutes.

For days when I have events, I take it up a notch by using primer, matte liquid foundation, concealer, eyebrow pen, eyelid tape (yup, I need this since my hooded eyelids are uneven), eyeliner, mascara, contour, blush, highlighter, and lipstick. This would probably take me an hour!”

3. What are the top 5 beauty products (skincare and makeup) that you can’t live without?

“1 – Lipstick! Lipstick is my first makeup love. Even if I’m super kikay, I sometimes get lazy to fix myself up so lipstick instantly saves the day. My favorite look is the clean face base + bright lipstick. MAC Ruby Woo is my favorite red lipstick!

2 – Face powder. My face is really oily so a good face powder instantly makes me look put together and not haggard. My current go-to face powder is Cathy Doll Speed White CC Powder Pact – Sample Room gave away samples of this a few months back!

3 – Matte liquid foundation. When it comes to “Splurge or Save” in the makeup category, please splurge on your foundation. It goes all over your face so it has to be of good quality for it to last all day and not cause irritations. My favorite is Estee Lauder Double Wear Foundation.

4 – Oil blotting sheets. I like the film-type ones without powder (so it won’t clog your pores). Oil-control sheets make me look fresh even without retouching my makeup.

5 – Serum. This one’s an underrated and often ignored beauty product but it makes a huge difference. I’ve tried some that were too rich/thick that made me break out, but when you find the right one for your skin, it will make you glow. My skin became really healthy and my post-acne marks lightened when I used The Body Shop’s Drops of Light Pure Healthy Brightening Serum so I’ll keep repurchasing!”

1. When did you first find out about Sample Room?

“It was in 2013 when I first found out about Sample Room and made my first haul – 2 full-sized Celeteque products and a Dove soap bar for free and paid only P100 for shipping! That was such a nice deal, so how can one not get hooked?”

2. How did Sample Room help you in your journey into the world of skincare and makeup?

“I love how Sample Room is for everyone. Some of my colleagues thought that Sample Room was exclusive for bloggers, so I explained to them that anyone can register to get 100 points to shop – just pay for shipping. I love that I can try the samples before purchasing it, so this saves me money.”

3. What were your best finds that you discovered through our site?

“I always love it when Sample Room releases new Belo products in their site. My favorite find is the full-sized tube of Belo SunExpert Tinted Sunscreen which I got last year. I saw it in Watsons and I wanted to try it so badly, but was having second thoughts because the only shade was marked “medium to deep” and it’s expensive at P450! I got home and saw that Sample Room was giving it away so I just spent a little over P100 for shipping. The shade was a perfect match, too! Super sulit (worth it)! I also like the Gluta-C with Kojic Plus+ Shower Salt Scrub which I recently got from Sample Room. I shoot beauty products in our office pantry during break time (yup, I make the most out of my precious time) and our office cleaning lady chatted me up asking me if I was selling beauty products. I told her no, but was able to get the scrub at Sample Room, and we bonded over a quick arm scrubbing session.”

4. Do you see yourself still sampling in Sample Room in 3-5 years?

“Of course! I’d hunt for samples in Sample Room for as long as the site is up.”

5. Any advice for your fellow roommates for their sampling journey?

“For practical reasons, make the most out of sample shopping by making sure that the cost of your haul is more than the shipping fee. Always give detailed and honest reviews to help consumers decide if the product you tried is worth buying or not. Also, you can pay via debit card online so you won’t have to line up at the bank. It saves time!”
