Roommate of the Month for December 2020

2020 was not an easy year for all of us, as we all have been trying to make a conscious effort to stay afloat and take baby steps in accomplishing our goals. Having a hobby or doing something you’re passionate about is one way to be positive and clear out all the negativity that’s been happening around us. Take our December Roommate of the Month as an example, Arlet “Letz” Abelgas juggles time between her family business and a full-time job - which can be both demanding and exhausting. As a way to keep herself energized & inspired, she found resolve in vlogging - sharing her travel and food escapades, and eventually expanding her niche to beauty and lifestyle reviews.

Get to know more about the gal behind TaraLetz through our Q&A!

1. Tell us about you and your vlog.

“Hi! I am Letz, I am a Geodetic Engineer, Broker and Appraiser, currently working for a real estate developer. My family also has a travel company, Traveletz, Inc.

Together with my husband John, we created TaraLetz initially just to share some snippets of our travels and food discoveries.

The name TaraLetz came from:

Tara! - a colloquial Filipino word for Let’s go!  These two are somehow coined together as one word for emphasis. Taralets is usually used in casual conversations to invite someone to join you.

Letz - is my nickname, with my husband John, we are known to invite and influence family and friends to eat at this certain restaurant, attend this event or festival, try this brand of lipstick or to go to this new travel destination, thus the birth of TaraLetz!

During my vacant hours, while on quarantine, I started to explore, build and curate content on Instagram as well. My content then evolved to include shopping hauls and unboxing, food and product reviews to share my recommendations to other people. With consistent uploads and quality postings, by mid-year, I started receiving requests for brand collaborations.”

2. When did you start your vlog and what inspired you to create one?

“We were just watching YouTube videos most of the time, may it be for Mobile Legends games, make-up tutorials, and travel vlogs. Late in the year of 2018, I was inspired to edit my first video by watching a TV program (Asia's Next Top Model). I was amazed by their intro with great music and editing that I wanted to create my own, with all the clips we had from our recent travels back then.”

3. Who are the vloggers that you look up to?

“There are quite a lot! I love Anne Clutz and Anna Cay when it comes to skincare and makeup. Becoming Filipino, Congtv, Viy Cortez and Hungry Syrian Wanderer for inspiring vlogs. IamAileenTV for travel videos.”

4. Top 3 pieces of advice you can give to our roommates who are interested to start up a vlog.

“1. You have to start now! The crucial part is the first step, the name of your channel or brand, and the first photo or video to upload. Create content that will introduce yourself to the world. I am quite shy myself but being a content creator and micro-influencer helped me improve my communication skills and confidence.

2. Find your niche, may it be food, fashion, gaming, makeup, news, travel, daily vlogs. Choose which one you are comfortable with and which comes easily to you. Show your natural you.

3. Make it your goal to help. Talk about things you'd like to share that can help other people may it be to share information, to entertain or to inspire.”

1. Share with us your skincare routine!

“My skin type is oily acne-prone so my basic skincare routine starts with an anti-acne foam cleanser then an anti-acne or brightening toner, CICA or Vitamin C serum and a moisturizer. I also use facial masks every other day, clay mask or scrubs to exfoliate every week and acne pimple patches as needed. I also double cleanse with micellar water with Argan Oil whenever I wear heavy makeup. I am also introducing some actives like retinol in my skincare routine.”

2. How about your makeup routine?

“Currently I am working from home and some days I am wearing a face mask so I just use light makeup.  I use tinted sunscreen or a tone-up cream, face powder, lip tint or lipstick and lightly pencil my brows. When I have dark spots or dark undereyes, I use a concealer.”

3. What are the top 5 beauty products (skincare and makeup) that you can't live without?

“Top 5 Skincare: Makeup remover, Cleanser, Toner, Serums, Sunscreen

Top 5 Makeup: Concealer, Face Powder, Bronzer, Eyebrow Pencil, Lipstick”

1. When did you first find out about Sample Room?

“I learned about Sample Room from posts of IG influencers. I got really interested when they were posting full-size products as samples from well-known brands, that's why I have decided to try it myself.”

2. How did Sample Room help you in your journey into the world of skincare and makeup?

“Sample Room helped me to try samples that made me discover products best suited for my skin type. It will be costly for me to buy products on my own later to find out that it is not effective. I am thankful for Sample Room because I found some of my skincare favorites and even household essentials.”

3. What were your best finds that you discovered through our site?

“I love Belo products! Their SunExpert Tinted Sunscreen, SunExpert Whitening Sunscreen and Intense White Anti-Perspirant Deodorant Spray are my top picks including the AcnePro line. My best finds also include the St. Ives Energizing Coconut & Coffee Scrub, Kamillosan M Spray that is very handy, and the AmbiPur Antibac Fabric Spray.”

4. Do you see yourself still sampling in Sample Room in 3-5 years?

“Yes, I hope so! I am constantly on the lookout for great products and sampling is very cost-effective for me. With this I also get to help others discover these great products by sharing my honest reviews.”

5. Any advice for your fellow roommates for their sampling journey?

“My advice to fellow roommates is to practice smart sampling. Take samples that you need and will definitely use so that you can share your honest thoughts about the products that will help other consumers. But, don't be afraid to try new things as well, there are lots of amazing products in Sample Room, waiting to be discovered and sampled by you.”
